UK news: protests in Belfast, Northern Ireland

 

There has been more trouble in Northern Ireland recently as protests continue over the flying of the Union flag in the city, related to split opinions on independence from the UK.

 

To help explain this problem, below are details of the two sides involved:

 

Union flag

Nationalists – these are the people who want Northern Ireland to be separate from the UK. The government there is now majority nationalist and so they made the decision to fly the flag less often.

 

Loyalists – these are the people who prefer to remain as part of the UK and are protesting because of the decision over the flag.
