British news: New Year’s Honours


The New Year’s Honours list for 2013 has been released in the UK. This details the people who will receive special titles from the queen this year, for example becoming Knights (Sir) or Dames.


Cyclist Bradley Wiggins will be knighted to become Sir Bradley Wiggins. (He has a knighthood.)

Female cyclist Sarah Storey has been given the same honour to become Dame Sarah Storey.


There are other awards:

Commander of the British Empire (CBE)

Officer of the British Empire (OBE)

Member of the British Empire (MBE)


People who are given the above awards can put the letters after their names. For example:

Jessica Ennis CBE

Andy Murray OBE

Nicola Adams MBE


All the people mentioned above are sports people honoured in a special list to recognise the success of the British Olympic athletes (Olympians) this year.
