British pronunciation video: words ending in “r”

Oumaima Jallouli ‏@oumaima_J on Twitter has asked me to make a video about the “r” at the end of words. Here I present examples of British pronunciation.

I think that many Britons do not pronounce the “r” properly, making an “uh” sound with words ending with “r”:

Tractor             trak-TUH

Doctor             DOK-tuh

Dinner             DIH-nuh

November       No-VEM-buh

December        Duh-SEM-buh

Calculator        KAL-kyoo-lay-tuh

Twitter                        TWIH-tuh

Some words have a slight “r” sound, but it is still not particularly clear:

Or

For

War

Fair

Air

Fear

Near

Beer

Idea

Car

Far

But we do pronounce the “r” when following words with another starting with a vowel:

Far away         fah-ruh-WAY
