UK news: BBC crisis

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is facing somewhat of a crisis after consecutive bad stories in recent weeks led to the Director General (the big boss), George Entwistle, resigning last night.

Several weeks ago reports starting emerging that a very famous person who is now dead, called Jimmy Savile, allegedly committed hundreds of criminal offences during his career for the BBC, but nothing was ever done to stop him or report him at the time.

Then, last week, a famous BBC news programme called “Newsnight” broadcast a story alleging that a significant political figure from many years ago, Lord McAlpine, was also involved in similar criminal activity. This has since been revealed to be untrue due to a case of mistaken identity.

The BBC is of course world-renowned and is arguably the best British English website and resource for material on just about anything, but these two stories have led to the resignation of the Director General and now many British people are discussing the credibility of much of the BBC’s work.
