A “big” lesson

Big” of course is an adjective which refers to size, but it is also used in collocations as a substitute for “important”.

EXAMPLES

“This is my first date so it’s a big night for me.”

“The Manchester derby next week is a really big game.”

“Getting my degree was a really big moment in my life.”

See how “big” basically means “important” in the above examples.
