Key term: interchangeable (interchangeably)

Interchangeable (adverb: interchangeably) is used to describe words or expressions which are virtually the same and can be used at the same time.

Very often I’m asked about the differences between similar terms (e.g. a post last week about because of, owing to, due to) and most of the time the answer is that the terms used to have slightly different meanings but are now used interchangeably (i.e. they are interchangeable).

So, many words and expressions in English are interchangeable. They can be used interchangeably.

Please learn and remember this vital term.
